Tabo
village is located in Lahaul and Spiti
District and is around 46 km south
of Kaza. It lies on the left bank of
the Spiti River, at an altitude of
3280 m.Surrounded by lofty brown hills,
the village is famous for the 1000-year-old
Tabo Monastery.
Tabo Monastery is an ancient monastery,
situated at Tabo Village, about 46
km south-east of Kaza in Lahaul and
Spiti District, Himachal Pradesh.Built
in 996, it is the largest monastic
complex in Spiti Valley. Also known
as Tabo-Chos-Khor, which means 'doctrinal
circle', it houses 9 temples, 23 chortens,
a monks' chamber and an extension that
houses the nuns' chamber. The monastery
houses fine sculptures, stucco images
and wall painting which are similar
to the Ajanta-Ellora paintings in Maharashtra.
